What is Protein and Why Do We Need It?
Protein is a vital macronutrient that we need to ingest on a daily basis. It’s vital for the sustenance of life and next to water it makes up the largest portion of our body.

How Much Protein Do We Need?
The amount of protein you need depends on your gender, your weight and your level of activity. The recommended requirement of protein is measured in milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight.
As a rough guide, the amount of protein that you need on a daily basis is around about 1 gm per kilogram of bodyweight. So if you weigh 70kg (154lbs), you need about 70gm of protein per day.
If you’re working out regularly, you’re building muscle or you have a busy life, its good to have more protein in your diet.
What Happens If We Don’t Get Enough Protein?
Not having enough protein affects our bodies in a multitude of ways.
If we don’t get enough protein we lose muscle mass, our metabolic rate slows down (and we put on weight easier), we have lowered immunity (and get sick more often), we have dry skin and hair (they lose elasticity) and our wounds don’t heal as quickly as they should.

When you don’t get enough protein, your body will start breaking down muscle to get what it needs which means your organs and bones are also at risk.

How Miessence Deodorant Can Protect Your Health
Before I knew about the miessence deodorant, Id been unknowingly using deodorant with unhealthy ingredients pretty much every day since I was a teenager. In the past I wasn’t aware of the chemicals in most personal care products and I just used to pick them on which one smelled the nicest.
After going completely organic I started reading labels and educating myself on what ingredients were in the commercial brands I used to use, and I became quite alarmed and annoyed at what is allowed in products that we use daily on our bodies.
One of the reasons is because many commercial product manufacturers priority isn’t their consumer’s health, but only how they can maximize their profit. The health of the consumer often isn’t even a concern for them; otherwise they wouldn’t allow so many dangerous ingredients in their products.
Most commercial brands of deodorant and antiperspirants contain a variety of harsh chemicals that have yet to be thoroughly tested for safety. Aluminum can be toxic and is potentially dangerous to our health and many of the other ingredients often found in antiperspirants can also have undesirable side effects.
Did you know that as much as 1/3 of all personal care products contain at least one ingredient that has been classified as a possible human carcinogen?
You can check the label of the deodorant or antiperspirant you’re currently using to see if aluminum or parabens are listed, and it’s not just the aluminum you want to avoid. Many other harmful chemicals can be found in most antiperspirants/deodorants and from studies done, these chemicals (especially parabens) have been found in many breast cancer tumors.
Concerns about aluminum and other harmful chemicals found in many commercial brands has led to many people searching for so-called “natural deodorant”. However, even though the word “natural” is often used on the labeling it doesn’t mean that a product is good for our health.
The fact that they don’t use the word “aluminum” on their ingredient label doesnt mean they are aluminum-free either. If it says “mineral salts”, “kalinite” or “alum” it can still contain aluminum and many other toxic ingredients. As an example, commercial products can advertise on their deodorants that they “contain no aluminum chlorohydrate” and then misleadingly list “alum” or “natural mineral salts” on their packaging.
Why is Aluminum Harmful to our Bodies?
Aluminum chloryhdrate is a common ingredient in most deodorants and the synthetically extracted soluble form can be very toxic to our bodies.
Most commercial brands of antiperspirants and deodorants contain either aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium. These compounds are soluble and readily absorbed by the body.
There are many sicknesses and symptoms that have been associated with excess aluminum in the body, ranging from Gastrointestinal disturbances, poor calcium metabolism, nervousness, headaches, memory loss, softening of the bones and bone formation disorders, altered kidney and or liver function and a possible connection with Alzheimer’s Disease and breast cancer.
Avoiding personal care products that contain these compounds is one of the best ways of limiting the amount of aluminum we’re exposed to and any detrimental side effects as a result of it.
Antiperspirants vs deodorants:
While a lot of people use both deodorants and antiperspirants many people don’t realize they have very different functions.
Antiperspirants (as the name clearly indicates) completely stop the body’s natural perspiration process (due to the aluminum blocking the pores). The sweat glands are designed to help our bodies excrete waste materials and antiperspirants are detrimental to our health is because the toxins stay clogged in the body. These toxins do not magically disappear. Instead the body deposits them in the lymph nodes below the arms since it cannot sweat them out, which can can lead to cell mutation and higher risk of Cancer.
