What is Protein and Why Do We Need It?

Excellent health

Protein is a vital macronutrient that we need to ingest on a daily basis. It’s vital for the sustenance of life and next to water it makes up the largest portion of our body.

Our body uses protein to build and repair tissues, to make enzymes, hormones and to support many other important bodily functions. Protein is important for our muscles, bones, cartilage, skin and blood.

The liver manufactures about 80% of amino acids, but the remaining 20% of amino acids must be supplied directly by diet.  (These amino acids are referred to as the essential amino acids).

Amino acids are the building blocks of our bones, muscles and tissue. It is important to note that, unlike fat and carbohydrates that can be stored in the body and utilized as required, protein cannot be stored; so it is vital to consume the appropriate amount of protein on a daily basis.

How Much Protein Do We Need?

how much protein do we need

The amount of protein you need depends on your gender, your weight and your level of activity. The recommended requirement of protein is measured in milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight.

As a rough guide, the amount of protein that you need on a daily basis is around about 1 gm per kilogram of bodyweight.  So if you weigh 70kg (154lbs), you need about 70gm of protein per day.

If you’re working out regularly, you’re building muscle or you have a busy life, its good to have more protein in your diet.

What Happens If We Don’t Get Enough Protein?

lacking protein

Not having enough protein affects our bodies in a multitude of ways.

If we don’t get enough protein we lose muscle mass, our metabolic rate slows down (and we put on weight easier), we have lowered immunity (and get sick more often), we have dry skin and hair (they lose elasticity) and our wounds don’t heal as quickly as they should.

Protein is important for maintaining muscle and bone mass, for keeping the immune system strong and to prevent fatigue.

When you don’t get enough protein, your body will start breaking down muscle to get what it needs which means your organs and bones are also at risk.

Here are some signs that can indicate you are not getting enough protein:

1. You’re Tired When You Shouldn’t Be

If you feel tired a lot, feel worn out or like you don’t have vibrant energy, insufficient protein could be the cause.

It can also affect your motivation and can be the cause of mental fatigue.

2. You Feel Weak

When you don’t get enough protein, your muscles aren’t able to repair themselves and can start shrinking. Protein is essential for building muscle and if you’re not getting enough protein in your diet, you can feel weak, tired and unable to do things as well as you used to.

3.You Get Cravings

junk food cravings

If you constantly get cravings and feel like snacking between meals it can be a sign of protein deficiency.

One of protein’s most critical functions is keeping your blood sugar steady and keeping you feeling satiated after meals, so if your body doesn’t have enough, you can start craving sweets and junk food.

4. You’re Flabby Where You Used To Be Muscular

flabby from lack of protein

Sometimes people think its just age that makes our bodies decline, but if you’re not getting sufficient protein your body will start using up your muscle and other sources to get what it needs.

The less muscle you have the more fat you will have and the flabbier you will be.

Also, when you’re protein-deficient, it’s not just the appearance and size of your muscles that decline, their performance does too.

5. You’re Getting Injured And Not Recovering Properly

getting enough protein

Slowed recovery doesn’t just apply to rebuilding muscles after a tough workout. If you’re protein deficient and get injured, your body also takes much longer to heal.

Protein is necessary to build new tissue, so if it’s not available, your body can’t rebuild itself.

6. Your Hair, Nails and Skin Become Weak, Brittle and Lose Their Strength

dry skin

Protein is the building block of all of your cells and when your body doesn’t get sufficient protein, it goes into conservation mode depriving other parts of your body of protein.

This affects cell renewal and growth and can make nails brittle, skin dry and your hair weak(and can even make it fall out). Also if your skin isn’t strong you can get tears and cracks potentially exposing you to pathogens and infections.

7. You Get Sick More Often

Protein is needed to build all the compounds in our immune systems, so if you seem to catch colds or infections more often than everyone else (and you’re otherwise in good health) a protein deficiency may be the cause.

 protein deficiency

8. Your Brain Feels Foggy

Your mental clarity and ability to stay focused can be affected by protein deficiency. Proteins help the time-release of carbs for steady consistent energy instead of up and down spikes.

So if you’re finding brain fog and mental lethargy affecting your tasks, its likely from a lack of protein in your diet.

Where Do You Get Your Protein From?

Most people think protein is derived from animal products (we can get protein from meat, fish, dairy and eggs) but what some people don’t understand is that all plant products have protein as well, especially grains, legumes, beans, nuts and seeds (which are very high quality sources of protein).

The issue with plant proteins is sometimes they can be incomplete in terms of their amino acid profile.

Our bodies use amino acids in a specific ratio to each other. If we don’t get enough of one of them to match with the others, they can only be utilized at the level of the lowest (limiting) one.

These are called limiting amino acids and if our diet is deficient in one of them, this will limit the usefulness of the others, even if they are eaten in large quantities.

Why Animal Protein Is Bad

Animal Protein is one of the most metabolically acidic foods that exist. It produces free radical formation and damage to cells which accelerates the aging process.

It can contribute to bone demineralization, which can lead to weakened bones and osteoporosis.

Animal protein is often full of Antibiotics, Growth Hormones, and cancer causing  additives(which also kills the beneficial flora in your colon).

Animal protein is often from animals that are fed feed that contains pesticides, genetically modified ingredients and toxic fertilizers.

Animal proteins have been heated and pasteurized, which denatures the amino acids, reducing the actual amount of protein your body is able to use and assimilate.

Animal protein has very little to offer nutritionally– being devoid of fiber and low in essential vitamins and minerals.

Animal protein is also not compassionate to the lives of other sentient beings. Most animals kept for food sources are kept alive in absolutely horrendous conditions (living in dread, suffering, anxiety and fear) in which they live their short, stunted, horrific lives.

Consider going Vegan to improve your health, to live compassionately and to protect our Planet.

“Diets high in animal products can cause a host of health problems ranging from increased risk of heart disease and certain cancers to weight gain and autoimmune disorders and deteriorating digestive probiotics within. What many people don’t realize, however, is just how aging consumption of animal protein can be. While many people think that animal protein is healthy as long as its lean, the truth is that all types of animal proteins are unhealthy and can lead to critical imbalances in your body that sap you of your energy, drain minerals from your bones and cells, and actually speed up the aging process.” – Kimberly Snyder

Protein for Muscle building

protein for muscle buildingAmino acids are the building blocks of your muscles and body. If you’re working out and building muscle, its essential to provide your body with sufficient protein throughout the entire day.

Exercise does have a profound effect on muscle growth, but this can occur only if muscle protein synthesis exceeds muscle protein breakdown; therefore there must be a positive muscle protein balance to be able to build up the muscles.

Because protein is important in so many bodily functions(building and repairing tissues, making enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals) if you want to build muscle you need to make sure you have sufficient protein intake to cover all your body’s daily needs and additional protein to build muscle.
